Purpose

Creating a UAS airspace management system is a new field with evolving regulations and ongoing trials. In Europe, the U-space concept involves managing airways and their interconnections, allowing private sector proposals for practical implementation. Airways are spatial zones where UAS systems handle route maintenance and control.
This project aims to develop a modular airspace management system that accurately detects traffic and external interference. It will create secure, high-performance technologies for UAS airways, supporting diverse traffic and operators. The system will integrate with UAS control cycles, providing status updates and transmitting commands from MVMS systems to drones.

Project at a glance

FARAWAY is co-funded by the PNRR through the MOST Programme (Sustainable Mobility Center - CENTRO NAZIONALE PER LA MOBILITA' SOSTENIBILE).
The first phase involves identifying the possible types of airways related to the domain of the call and consequently identifying the possible UAS users of these airways.
After identifying and defining application domains and aircraft, we will move on to hypothesize the characterization both for the nominal scenarios of use and for the possible problems that may occur in order both to hypothesize the desired performance and to model the control system and the simulator with which to stimulate it.
The next steps are therefore to collect the requirements, to enable the experimentation phase in which the various features will be tested, to consolidate and update the requirements.

Objectives

Develop a Modular Airspace Management System: create a system that accurately detects traffic within airways and external interferences. This includes developing technologies for UAS airways that are high-performing and secure, capable of handling various types of traffic and operators to support both freight and passenger logistics with high safety and performance standards.

1. Integrate Airways into UAS Control Loops
Innovate by incorporating airways into the UAS control cycle. The system will not only monitor the status of UAS traversing the airways but also serve as a conduit for transmitting commands from MVMS systems to individual drones, allowing precise control without requiring drones to know operational specifics.

2. Test Various Scenarios, Including Non-Nominal Situations
Conduct tests on different scenarios, including non-nominal situations, to validate the effectiveness of the developed system and hypotheses. This includes evaluating the system's performance in various conditions to ensure its reliability and robustness.

3. Assess Environmental and Performance Improvements
Enable studies to evaluate how the new airways can enhance current logistics systems, focusing on performance improvements and environmental impact reductions compared to existing systems.
