PURPOSE

The DigItaliA project – Applications of Artificial Intelligence for the study and development of an advanced digital platform for the resilience of agro-food and pharmaceutical industrial supply chains – is a research and development initiative born within an industrial and economic context marked by strong pressure toward advanced digitalisation of production chains, particularly in the agri-food and pharmaceutical sectors, which are considered strategic for both the European and Lombardy economies.

Despite the growing adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Europe still lags significantly behind the United States and China in terms of investment, industrial uptake, and technological development. This gap risks undermining the competitiveness of manufacturing companies, especially SMEs, which face increasingly complex challenges such as:

•   rising quality, safety, and traceability requirements;

•   the need for greater resilience and flexibility in supply chains;

•   optimisation of resource usage and waste reduction;

•   difficulties in knowledge transfer and generational turnover.

Within this scenario, DigItaliA addresses the need for integrated, scalable, and data-driven digital solutions capable of supporting more informed operational decisions and fostering a concrete transition toward Industry 5.0 paradigms, centred on human–machine collaboration.

PROJECT AT A GLANCE

The DigItaliA project – funded under Axis 6 of the PR FESR 2021–2027 of the Lombardy Region through the “Strategic Technologies – STEP” call – aims to design, develop, and validate an integrated technological platform based on:

•   Artificial Intelligence (predictive, prescriptive, and generative);

•   advanced sensing technologies (including e-nose sensors);

•   computer vision and deep learning;

•   interoperable, EDGE-oriented digital architectures.

The platform will be validated through two real-world use cases:

1.   the dairy supply chain, with a focus on sensory quality, food safety, and decision support;

2.   the pharmaceutical supply chain, with particular attention to visual inspection processes and sterile fill-finish plants.

The project will run from December 2025 to May 2028 and includes activities related to supply chain analysis, architectural design, technological development, experimentation, and industrial validation.
